Tour 2: Wairakei, the Air Element (2 Days)

Day 1:

Pick up from Rotorua accommodation.

Drive to Waimangu Thermal Wonderland.

Waimangu is the only geothermal system in the World created within written history (the last 5000 years) by the Tarawera Eruption on 10 June 1886.

There are numerous hot pools and springs and geysers. Waimangu was the site of the famed pink and white terraces; silica formations that held bathing pools enjoyed by both locals and tourists up until 1886 when they were destroyed by the eruption.

We will take time for you to enjoy a walk around the thermal valley enjoying the sights and smells of this natural wonderland, and take a boat cruise on Lake Rotomahana where your guide will highlight areas of significance and sights not seen by land. Lunch at the café at Waimangu.

Continue on to Ohaaki Geothermal Power Station.

We will stop at the viewing area to see the geothermal pipelines that carry steam to the Wairakei Power Station where it is harnessed to generate electricity. From here you can see the 105 metre-high cooling tower which cools the water separated from the steam before it is injected back into the ground. The Wairakei scheme was the second geothermal power station in the world, but the first to harness wet steam to generate electricity.

Continue towards Taupo to view the spectacular Huka Falls and stroll along the scenic pathways.

Drive to accommodation for check in and dinner. After dinner we will take you for a long hot soak in the thermal waters of Wairakei Terraces. These adult-only pools are in a lovely bush setting and include three large pools and a hot water waterfall.

Day 2:

Pick up from accommodation and drive to Huka Honey Hive.  Enjoy tastings of honey, mead, liqueurs and fruit wines at New Zealand’s largest showcase of honey products. View live beehives, learn about the amazing honeybee and test a wide range of honey-based skincare and wellness products.

Continue to Craters of the Moon and walk across steaming vents and bubbling hot pools on a boardwalk. Take either the short walk of 45 minutes, or add an extra 20 minutes and walk to the lookout where you can see all the geothermal activity below.

Drive on to Whakamaru Power Station, stopping for lunch at the Dam Café. Whakamaru is a major node in the electricity transmission network in the North Island whereby power from five hydroelectric power stations on the Waikato River plus all of the Taupo region geothermal power is collected there and then transmitted to northern regions of the North Island.

Drive through the scenic Waikite Valley to the Wai-O-Tapu (Sacred Waters) Thermal area. Marvel at the many geothermal features including the multi-coloured Champagne Pool, bubbling mud pool and stunning mineral terraces.

Finally, we drive back to Rotorua, our hub and the completion of this tour where we will deliver you to your accommodation.

Cost from $490 per person per day based on twin share.

Includes transport, guide and driver, accommodation and breakfast on Day 2.

Excludes entry fees to attractions underlined in the Itinerary.
