Sit back and relax as you enjoy the drive between Auckland and Wellington. It is filled with stunning New Zealand scenery and cultural destinations.
Day 1: pick up from Auckland airport or accommodation. Drive through scenic and historical Waikato region stopping at Waitomo Caves or Hobbiton on the way to Rotorua.
Day 2: Full day tour of Rotorua: including its Māori Culture, Geothermal and natural scenery. Visit places of interest such as Te Puia Māori Arts and Crafts Institute and New Zealand’s largest Geyser Pohutu, Whakarewarewa living Māori Village, Redwood Treewalk, Waimangu – the world’s newest geothermal area, or Hamurana Springs – home to the deepest freshwater spring in the North Island.
Day 3: Rotorua to Central Plateau. Stopping on the way to see glass blowing at Lava Glass, or the Aratiatia Rapids flooding, or Orakei Korako– the hidden valley of highly active geothermal geysers, bubbling mud pools and hot springs across colourful sinter terraces. Overnight stay in gateway town of Turangi or the ski town Ohakune to experience old fashioned hospitality and mountain views.
Day 4: Beginning with an early morning stroll through native fauna followed by a leisurely drive to Wellington through rolling countryside, farmland and quaint small towns.
Alternatively, we can arrange a transfer to the Great Journeys of New Zealand Northern Explorer Train to complete your journey to Wellington. This is a spectacular way to see the scenery of the lower North Island from a unique perspective; in comfort with commentary and viewing car.
